Village needs to make a taxi decision now

The village has, once again, delayed making a decision on whether to allow Village Car Service to operate within its borders.

The situation is now bordering on the farcical.

The decision to license a competing car service should be a simple one. Residents making their way around town would be better served by companies competing for their business, commuters disembarking from trains would have more options, and the village itself would make more money, with two companies paying it fees. Adding another car service seems to us to be a win-win.

And yet the village has decided to wait 60 days, as it is allowed, to make a decision. That means the earliest the Board of Trustees could decide would be at its next meeting, in July — conveniently, after the village election on June 18.

The Herald encourages Rockville Centre residents who support competition and oppose government-sanctioned monopolies (which the village would perpetuate if it were to reject Village Car Service’s appeal) to call or email the Board of Trustees and the mayor and let them know what you think. They represent you, after all.

You can reach the mayor’s office at (516) 678-9260, and any of the trustees at 678-9246. To send an email, go to www.rvcny.us.

Let your voice be heard. This isn’t about Village Car Service or All-Island Transportation. This is about the village doing what is best — and what is right — for its residents.
