Volunteers bring back a different kind of aid in Oceanside

Posted

When Hurricane Sandy hit, firefighters from Broome County in upstate New York came down to help Oceanside. When they left to go back home, they decided to even further beyond their call of duty.

The same firefighters from Broome County returned to Oceanside last weekend. But instead of a fire truck, they were driving a 53-foot box truck full of food, clothes, water and pet food for Oceanside residents.

The items were offloaded into an empty storefront on Poole Street that the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce set up for the occasion. From there, the goods are being distributed all over the community. St. Anthony’s Church and the Oceanside Lutheran Church have already taken goods.

And next weekend, a truck from Maryland will also be dropping off donations at the Poole Street location.
