Oceanside man arrested for alleged robbery of five post offices, one in Hewlett

Nassau police arrested an Oceanside man for allegedly robbing five post offices, including the one in Hewlett.

According to Robbery Squad detectives, Nehemiah Bellamy, 28, of Brower Avenue, drove a vehicle, with another person to the U.S. Post Office at 867 Hempstead Tpke., Franklin Square at 3 p.m. on June 22.

Bellamy waited in the vehicle while the other person subject entered the post office and requested a money order from the postal employee at the counter, police said. The employee, 38, opened the register drawer and the person allegedly reached into the drawer grabbing an unspecified amount of blank postal money orders.


The employee tried to stop the person from taking the money orders and there was a physical struggle, the person broke free, left the post office and fled with Bellamy, who was driving, in the vehicle, according to police.

A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Bellamy on Friday, in Glen Head on June 29. The second person has not yet been arrested.

During the investigation it was determined that Bellamy was allegedly involved in four other such incidents.

On June 18, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, 750 Old Country Road, Westbury, charged with possession of a forged instrument. On the same day, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, 210 West Merrick Road, Freeport, charged with possession of a forged instrument.

On June 20, U.S. Post Office, 260 Elmont Road, Elmont, charged with grand larceny and on June 29, U.S. Post Office, 1245 Hewlett Plaza, Hewlett, charged with petit larceny.

In the Hewett incident police said no force was used and no one was injured. The alleged thief fled on foot and was said to be wearing a baseball cap. There was no other official description of the person, but at least one customer said he was a black man.

Bellamy is charged with robbery third-degree, five counts of possession of a forged instrument second-degree, grand larceny fourth-degree and petit larceny.

He is in custody and represented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County. He was scheduled to be in court on July 3.
