Jimi Gubelli 5K set for June 24

The 9th annual Jimi Gubelli 5K run/walk will be held on June 24 at Masone Beach in Island Park. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. and check-in is at 8 a.m.

Jimi Gubelli was a beloved member of the Island Park community who died of a heart attack in 2008. Gubelli owned a restaurant and often opened his doors to various local civic groups, such as the Knights of Columbus, for their meetings. Jimi was a member of the Island Park Fire Department, a devoted son, brother, uncle and friend.

The charity raises money for college scholarships, funds automated external defibrillator installations and supports local community projects and initiatives.

Last year, six scholarships were awarded, and the number is contingent upon the amount of money raised each year. The scholarship is given to students from Island Park, Long Beach and West Hempstead. Winners will be notified on June 9, and the scholarship will be publicly awarded to the winners at the 5K on June 24.

Jimi’s niece, Nicole, mentioned the little bit of irony implicit in a 5K carrying Jimi’s name: “He hated running. Hated it.” Though she said that the charity would have been right up his alley, as he was always giving back to the community.

Since the first event in 2009, more than 3,500 participants and spectators have come out to support the foundation. Registration for the race costs $30 before June 24, and $35 the day of the 5K. Children under 14 can register for $15. Checks can be made payable to Jimi Gubelli Foundation, Inc. / PO Box 293 / Island Park, NY 11558
