Rockville Centre museum honors longtime businesses

The Rockville Centre Historical Society began a series of presentations last Sunday at the Phillips House Museum to recognize Rockville Centre businesses that have served the village’s patrons for many years.

Businesses were asked to provide a brief history of their enterprises, including early artifacts, which were returned after the presentation. The Phillips House, a restored Victorian-era home at 28 Hempstead Ave. that depicts life in Rockville Centre during the 19th and 20th centuries, was the perfect setting for the celebration.

“There’s about 50 businesses in town that have been here for 30, 40, 50, 100 years,” said Frank Seipp, president of the Historical Society, adding that the Phillips House would be hosting more events to honor additional establishments.

Businesses honored included CJ’s Coffee Shop, Leder’s Jewelers and Front Street Bakery, as well as local hubs like the Rockville Centre Public Library and Church of the Ascension, which was built in 1988. One of the most impressive artifacts, Seipp said, was the church’s 130-year-old processional cross.

“It was a real success,” Seipp said. “People were so happy to see each other and pleased to get the awards.”
