This column could have many titles. One might be, “Is there a Democratic Party in Nassau County?” Another could read, “Whatever Happened to the once proud Democratic machine in Long Beach?"

Growing up in Island Park, I was always acutely aware of how lucky I was to be surrounded by beautiful beaches, bountiful waterways and stunning coastlines. Preserving Nassau County’s coastal environs has been a main priority of my tenure in public office, and I am proud to represent so many community partners who share in that goal. Indeed, the pristine nature of our South Shore was recently threatened by a large-scale offshore wind turbine project proposed by Equinor, but thanks to unified community opposition, this dubious plan appears to have stalled — for now.

As a mother of four and a legislator deeply committed to public safety, I am compelled to address the recent horrific case in Babylon. This case — in which body parts were found in public spaces, including a park frequented by families, and a judge was unable to set bail and detain the defendants — highlights a disturbing trend: the prioritization of criminals over victims.

The year just finished wasn’t a good one for politicians, or politics in general. We have two wars, an inept majority in the House of Representatives, an up-and-down economy and the prospect of having two candidates for president who are both highly unpopular. But rather than begin the new year on a down note, I would like to focus on two elected officials who have gained my greatest respect.
