Gathering Time
Malverne-based Stuart Markus brings his acclaimed trio Gathering Time to Garden City for an evening of harmonious folk melodies. With their seamless vocal blend, precision guitar playing and inspired percussion, Markus, Hillary Foxsong and Gerry McKeveny display deep roots in ‘60s folk and folk-rock, with a healthy dose of traditional folk in the mix. Their stage chemistry makes it clear that they take the music (if not themselves) very seriously, with an infectious energy that wins over even fans who never considered themselves folkies. The band is known on Long Island — and throughout the northeast folk scene — for their soaring harmonies and dynamic sets that range from sweet and sentimental to joyous and energetic, irreverently funny to heart-stoppingly serious. Start with the social consciousness of Peter, Paul & Mary; add the vocal complexity of Crosby, Stills & Nash, throw in a bit of the Byrds and a bit of Joni and you have Gathering Time, a harmony trio that WFUV’s John Platt calls “among the top performers in the New York metropolitan area.”

Immerse yourself in some of the glorious sights of spring during Hofstra University’s annual Dutch Festival, a beloved local tradition. Revel in the thousands of colorful tulips blooming all around the South Campus, while enjoying entertainment and sampling authentic Dutch cuisine, along with activities for the kids. Also shop in the Dutch marketplace and at the annual plant sale. Performers include Dutch-born singer and entertainer Frans Bloem, who returns to the Hofstra stage; the East End Trio, one of the area’s premier ensembles; and the always popular New York’s Most Dangerous Big Band; along with the Hofstra String Quartet; Hofstra student talent from the Chamber Choir, Vocal Jazz Quartet and Jazz Ensemble; and the Nassau-Suffolk High School Jazz Ensemble.
