AvalonBay pays for park renovation in Rockville Centre

AvalonBay Community presented the village of Rockville Centre with a check for $100,000 to make improvements at Smith Pond Park, just to the west of the apartment complex.

According to Village Administrator Keith Spadaro, the money will be used to renovate, repair and replace the pier that extends into Smith Pond.

“The pier is in somewhat not great shape,” Spadaro said. “You used to be able to go out on to the path. They’re going to clear out the overgrowth, put in benches, redo the pier, clean up area and put in some lighting.”

Spadaro said bids still need to be received to decide what company does the work and at what cost. He said that AvalonBay and Rockville Centre Mayor Francis Murray had worked together over time to come to an agreement over the renovations.

“They wanted to be good neighbors,” Spadaro said. “They said this should be an asset for our residents and anyone who wants to use it.”
