Blessed animals at Saint Agnes ceremony

Posted

St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre held its annual blessing of the animals ceremony on Oct. 4. People from all over the diocese brought their pets to be blessed at the event, which takes place every year on the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Rev. William Koenig led the ceremony and sprinkled holy water on the animals, which included dogs, cats, rabbits and even turtles.

St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals. The 13th -century friar was known to express his respect and love for nature and animals during his sermons. In folklore, he was depicted as being able to speak with animals.
