Central Synagogue of Nassau County in Rockville Centre held its first Tof Miriam (frame drum) weekend Shabbaton program, led by Marla Leigh Goldstein, on April 4 through 6.

Marla Leigh is one of three Jewish female specialists in the world of the Tof Miriam drum. Highlights of the event included a sold-out concert of original and traditional Middle Eastern music featuring Marla Leigh (frame drum, flute, vocals), Brandon Tadiz (oud and nigoni), Liron Peled (percussion) and special guest Cantor Rachel Kohlbrenner of Central Synagogue. The performance inspired joyful dancing and spirited singing.

The weekend festivities continued on Sunday afternoon with a hands-on adult drumming workshop, where participants received their own Remo frame drum to take home.

“It was a deeply moving and memorable experience to share the rhythms of the Tof Miriam at Central Synagogue of Nassau County,” Leigh said. “From the program organizers, Carol Meyerson and Cantor Rachel Kohlbrenner as well as all the participants, everyone was a true delight to work with. I would absolutely love to return again.”
