Gas leak temporarily closes Banks Avenue

Malfunctioning truck spills LNG

A minor gas leak temporarily closed the NICE Bus depot on Banks Avenue in Rockville Centre on July 21.

According to police, a garbage truck from the Village of East Rockaway was filling up at the depot at about 10:46 a.m. The truck was filling up on Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), which it used as fuel. While filling up, a valve on the truck’s tank broke and the LNG began to leak.

Two members of the Rockville Centre Fire Department were able to stop the leak from the truck. A few minutes later, the area was deemed safe. There were no injuries.

Residents at the nearby AvalonBay apartment complex were notified of the leak and were asked to leave the area as a precaution. But the situation was resolved so quickly that the residents hadn’t all left before it was deemed safe for them to return.
