Hao Duc Bui, a well-loved parishioner of St. Agnes Cathedral and dedicated church volunteer, died after being hit by a Jeep in Bethpage on August 2. He was 31.

Bui was born at Winthrop Hospital in Mineola on Aug. 22, 1981. During his childhood in Bethpage, he began collecting rocks of all sorts, leading his family to believe he would pursue a career as a geologist. His passion for collecting grew as he did — he soon began acquiring memorabilia ranging from stamps and baseball cards to aluminum cans.

Although not a resident of the village, Bui was a steadfast member of St. Agnes Cathedral parish, and well known throughout the community and diocese, and remained a consistent presence at meetings of the St. Agnes Youth Group and the St. Agnes Council 2548 of the Knights of Columbus throughout his life.

“He was just one of those guys who knew everybody’s name, who would always say hi,” said Kevin Conway, a village resident who knew Bui through youth group. “He always wanted to meet new people. No matter what time of the day it was or where you were, he was genuinely happy to see somebody.”

Aside from collecting, Bui’s greatest passion was for volunteering — he was committed to bettering the communities around him, and frequently offered his services at food banks, homeless shelters and church events.

“Hao was especially proud to be a part of the Knights of Columbus,” said Marie Huong, Bui’s sister. “He worked incredibly hard to become a part and never wanted to miss a meeting or an event. Rain or shine, snow or heat — nothing could stop him from attending.”

Bui is survived by his parents and five siblings.
