Annual Scholarship Dinner to honor community members, raise funds for local students

On May 7, the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre will be holding its 31st Annual Scholarship Dinner, which will raise funds for local students, as well as the organization’s after-school programs.

The Scholarship Dinner is a long tradition for the Hispanic Brotherhood and is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year. The money raised goes right back into the community, and in the past has helped students attend schools like Yale, Cornell, Georgetown and more.

“It’s a chance for them to have money to go on to college,” said Marguerite Keller, co-director of the Hispanic Brotherhood. “A lot of our students, their families can’t afford it. So any bit of help is desperately needed.”

The dinner will also help fund the Hispanic Brotherhood’s after school program, which not only gives kids a place to go after school, but provides them with teachers to assist with their homework and projects.

The Hispanic Brotherhood also honors members of the community at the dinner for their service to Rockville Centre and the Hispanic community. This year’s honorees are: Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Univision 41 News Anchor Merijoel Duran, Healthfirst, Nassau Community College and the staff of Mercy Medical Center.

Tickets to the dinner can be purchased by calling the Hispanic Brotherhood at 516-766-6610, by emailing hispanicrvc@aol.com, or by visiting the Hispanic Brotherhood’s office at 59 Clinton Ave.
