In memory of Karen Resnick, a longtime Herald employee, Leonardo’s Hair Design will be holding a special fundraiser on Halloween.

James Bilello, the longtime owner of Leonardo’s, was good friends with Resnick, who was the sales representative for the Rockville Centre Herald for most of its 25-year history. Resnick was well-known and well-liked by many of the business owners in Rockville Centre that she worked with.

“I loved Karen,” Bilello said. “She was the most amazing woman I ever met. When she passed away, it felt like a family member passed.”

Every year for the 45 he has been in business, Bilello has turned Halloween into a fun time in his salon. He hosts a costume contest for his staff, and they all participate — dressing up in the most colorful and creative costumes while cutting customers’ hair.

But this year, Bilello decided to turn the event into a fundraiser in Resnick’s memory.

“When she passed, I had trees planted in Israel,” he said. “But I really wanted to do something else for Karen.”

On Halloween, Leonardo’s will be donating 10 percent of its gross sales to the Adelphi New York Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Center. And Bilello is making this year’s Halloween bigger than ever: there will be free gifts and give-aways for guests as well as refreshments. And everyone who gets their hair cut that day will receive a certificate for 10 percent off all services and products.
