The art of education

To the Editor:

It was great to see a student from Nassau BOCES’s Long Island High School for the Arts featured in last week’s Herald (“Kellar is stellar”).

That student dancer, Sara Kellar, received not only immersion in dance, but also arts college counseling from reps across the country. Public school guidance departments are not typically familiar with the colleges and conservatories represented at LIHSA’s fair.

Lynbrook, in recognition of the value of arts education, has, along with other districts, improved and accelerated its fine arts programs. Still, there are students for whom one or two periods of arts aren’t enough for them to think of it as a professional career. Districts might want to remember that significant scholarships received by these talented students are part of their scholarship tallies on the whole, and reflect well on their reputation.

In recent months, Billy Joel and a multitude of Broadway stars have come together to support LIHSA. They understand from experience what most LIHSA students already know: that in this setting there is extraordinary potential for the future.

What LIHSA needs most to survive is increased enrollment from districts. If you have a talented child, please visit the school’s website, www.nassauboces.org/LIHSA, to schedule an audition.

Does D’Amato really believe Trump’s line?

To the Editor:

Re Al D’Amato’s column “How can we make a great country greater?” (Nov. 24-30): I must disagree with his opinion of Mr. Trump’s motto and his thoughts on making America great again. In 1934, Adolf Hitler said the same thing about Germany. He was going to make it great again. In fact, those were his exact words.

As an American who loves her country, I am frightened, and would hope a seasoned politician such as D’Amato would be, too. God help America.
