Next week, Molloy College will begin hosting a new type of sports talk show program.

Called “Keeping Score,” the show will air on social media platforms and involve a great deal of audience interactivity. Filmed on the stage in the Madison Theatre, audience members, as well as those watching the show, will be able to post questions on Twitter for panelists to answer.

“We thought, particularly in the last couple of years, there’s been so much surrounding the world of sports in a negative way, challenging moral and ethical issues: performance enhancing drugs, domestic violence, tolerance and diversity in sports,” said Edward Thompson, the vice president for advancement and the man who created the show. “We said, wouldn’t it be interesting if we could create a venue aimed at young people, because Long Island is such a sports Mecca.”

Keeping Score will be hosted by Ed Randall, a sports radio personality and host of Ed Randall’s Talking Baseball on WFAN. Each show will have a different topic of discussion, with the first being inclusion in sports.

The audience will be able to tweet questions, which will be shown on a large screen on-stage behind the host and guests. Guests for the first episode include Billy Bean, the ambassador for inclusion for Major League Baseball.

The show won’t air weekly — Thompson hopes to have three to four episodes a year, but that could change in the future. The show is owned by Molloy and is being filmed there.

“I think Molloy has been pretty forward-thinking on a lot of issues,” Thompson said. “And we like the fact that we’re trying to find new platforms to accomplish our mission, which is education.”

Thompson is reaching out to and encouraging athletes from local high schools and little leagues to attend. He wants student athletes to be part of the discussion.

Seats can be reserved for the taping of Keeping Score for free by RSVPing to Eileen Sweeney at 323-4600 or esweeney@molloy.edu. The first episode will tape on June 2 at 7 p.m.
