A Herald Endorsement

Rockville Centre Library spending plan should be approved

Posted

The Rockville Centre Public Library is a shining example of reasonable budgeting. For just over $3 million a year — most of which pays staff members’ salaries — it provides a wide range of fun and educational programs for village residents, as well as books, movies and more for loan.

This year, the library budget is increasing only $9,836, to a total of $3.47 million. Split among 25,000 or so residents, that’s an increase of just 39 cents each. It’s ridiculously small, and the return is infinitely greater. The library will offer more and varied programs next year, and will also be upgrading its technology to provide patrons with new computers.

Failing to support this valuable and important public resource would be a mistake, and the Herald hopes everyone in Rockville Centre will vote in favor of the library budget.

Return Trustees Kelleher, Glass to board

Charlie Kelleher and Christine Glass are both running unopposed for their seats on the library’s Board of Trustees.

Again, the fact that no one is challenging them is a sign that they are doing an admirable job. But even more telling is the library itself, and the services it offers.

The board has responded to the desires of patrons and is offering more programs next year. Though the building is showing its age in places, it is still well maintained — and that’s all thanks to the oversight of the board.

We hope residents agree, and cast votes for Kelleher and Glass.
