Christmas Spectacular

The MLK Center will be holding its first annual Christmas Spectacular on Friday, Dec. 21 between 4-6 p.m. A play will be performed, Santa Claus will give out gives and there will be refreshments and other entertainment. For more information, please call 516-678-9236 or email at Patmorris@rvcny.us.

Christmas performance

South Side High School band alumni will gather at the Rockville Centre LIRR train station for their annual meeting to play Christmas music for charity. The alumni are provided a Salvation Army bucket and play the morning of Christmas Eve between 9-10 a.m., in front of the bakery.

Library blood drive

The Rockville Centre Library will hold a blood drive between 2-8 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Mercy to offer Diabetes-management programs

Mercy will offer winter sessions of Diabetes Self-Management Training programs. The four-session programs will be conducted in January on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and in February on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The program is most often covered by medicare, medicaid and private insurance. Winter Wishes Blood Drive

Mercy invites and encourages residents to participate in its Winter Wishes Blood Driver to support Long Island Blood Services on Wednesday, Jan. 9 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. All donors will receive a fleece scarf and gloves, compliments of the New York Blood Center, to keep or re-gift to a charitable organization of their choice. Anyone between the age of 17 and 75, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Healthy individuals older than 75 can donate blood if they present written permission from their physician obtained within two weeks of their donation. Donors should eat beforehand and bring reading glasses and ID with signature and know their social security number. Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave., is again sponsoring a Fall session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes, that began on Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m. — a new day and time. You may pay as you go for $15 a class. Members of the community are invited to participate. Phillips House Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre

28 Hempstead Avenue is open, free to the public, on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and by appointment by calling: 764-7459. The museum, a sea captain's house built in 1886, has period furnishings. Permanent displays include kitchen tools, wood-working tools, toys, dolls and period glassware. The trustees are always interested in exhibiting collections of local residents. If you have one you would like to share with the community on a temporary basis, please call the above number.

Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework by former teachers to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 pm in the Children’s Room of the Library. Rockville Centre Revisited: Photography by Ellen Fisch

The photographs of Ellen Fisch will be on exhibit on the Lover Concourse during the month of December. Ms. Fisch is an architectural fine art photographer based in New York. Her black-and-white and sepia tone photographs are timeless images evoking aesthetic beauty and a distinct sense of place. Well versed in painting and drawing, the photographer uses traditional fine art concepts to create images that go beyond conventional interpretations of her subjects. Fish’s photographs of a specific city, building, architectural detail or landmark encourage the viewer to journey to that place through photographic art to get its flavor and creating an indelible “placeprint” in the viewer’s mind. In 2010 Fisch photographed the charming and architecturally diverse community of Rockville Centre. The many styles of architecture and details of the area were brought to life in stunning black-and-white photographs. The result is a tour of the village through the eyes of a photographer. In the current exhibition Fisch revisits Rockville Centre to explore its beauty, spirit and character through setting and architecture. Visit Ellen Fisch Photography at www.ellenfisch.com

Helen Kraus and Small Community Room Galleries Autumn Meets Winter: Mixed Media by Galina Lampert

Works by artist Galina Lampert will be displayed in the Lower Gallery Rooms throughout the month of December. Her artistic goal is to convey feeling of happiness, calmness, and balance through her depictions of still lifes and landscapes. Each composition conveys the artist’s interpretation of the beauty of nature filled with beauty, uniqueness, light and color.

Ms. Lampert is a freelance artist, a member of The National Association of Women Artists, the Art Students League of New York, and the Alliance of Queens Artists. Living in Valley Stream, she often takes inspiration from the many parks, fountains, and sunsets and often includes scenes from her neighborhood in digital imagery and photography works.Lampert studied at the School of Visual Arts and at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She currently studies with the Art Students League and the Salmagundi Art Club. Ms. Lampert’s work has been widely displayed in museums, exhibits, and libraries across Long Island.

Winter Wonderland Sports Day on Dec. 24

On Dec. 24, kids in grades 2-5 will play foam hockey, kickball and other games. Children from kindergarten to first grade will have a "Just for Fun Day, including rope swing, trampoline and Tumble. Fee for both programs is $12. The programs begin at 10:45 a.m.

Annual "Holiday Games"on Dec. 26

On Dec. 26, the Rec Center will host a day of nok-hockey, basketball shooting and other games for students from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Fee is $12. The program begins at 12:30 p.m.

Crafts and Candy on Dec. 27

On Dec. 27, the Rec Center will teach kids from kindergarten to 5th grade how ice cream is made and sample freshly-made ice cream at the local Five Pennies Creamery. The program begins at 10:45 and the fee is $10. There will also be a holiday craft activity for kids in the same grades with sessions beginning at 11 a.m. or at 12:30 p.m. at a fee of $10. There will be an informal gymnastics workout for girls, grades 1st through 6th, with prior gymnastics experience. Sessions for grades 1st-2nd begin at 9:45, while the later grades begins at 11 a.m. Kids will also be able to take a trip to the Chocolate Works in Valley STream to make chocolate creationso n the 40 foot enrobing machine. The kids will also be able to tour the factor and a pizza lunch is included. It is for grades 1st through 6th and it begins at 12:30 p.m. The fee is $25.

Ice Skating on Dec. 28

Children grades 1-8 can have two hours of ice skating, including skate rental on Dec. 28. Fee is $17 and it will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Children from kindergarten to first grade will have a "Just for Fun Day, including rope swing, trampoline and Tumble. Fee for the program is $12. The programs begin at 10:45 a.m. There will also be a Whole Lotta Fun Day, which includes games like gaga, wembly and newcomb. The program also begins at 10:45 and costs $12. There will also be a trip to the Long Island Laser Bounce in Levittown for grades 1-8. The fee is $30 and includes a pizza lunch. The laster tag program begins at 12:15 p.m.

Bowling on Dec. 31

Children grades kindergarten through 2nd can join the Rec Center for the Candy Cane Classic for musical chairs, coke & Pepsi, Seaweed and other games beginning at $10:15. The fee is $12. THere will be New Years Eve Dodgeball for children grades 3-5, beginning at 10:45 at a fee of $12. There will be two hours of bowling at RVC Lanes for grades 1-8. The bus for grades 1-2 leaves at noon and returns at 2:30 p.m., while the bus for grades 3-8 leaves the rec center at 12:30 and returns at 3 p.m. The fee will be $17.

Open Gym Program

The main gymnasium of the Rec Center will be open for free play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 29. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up will begin Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. Admission is by valid 2012-2013 Recreation Card.

Celebrate the season with a party at Temple Avodah in Oceanside on Dec. 14 at 12 p.m. The afternoon fee is $45 for non members and includes lunch and dancing.

SSMS seasonal performance

The music students from the South Side Middle School will perform holiday and seasonal music at the Sandel Senior Center on Dec. 18 at 11 a.m.

Intergenerational holiday party

Members and students will get together for a holiday event that will have entertainment and refreshments on Dec. 20 at 12 p.m.
