Community Events

Mercy Offers Free CT Lung Scans

The program at Mercy continues to offer a CT lung scan free-of-charge to current or former smokers age 50 or older, and individuals age 40 or older who have never smoked but have been exposed to second-hand smoke. Information about the study is available on line at: www.ielcap.org.

RVC Community Blood Drive

A blood drive will be held at Hewitt Elementary School on Saturday, Dec. 1 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Those elligible should bring ID with a signature or photo. Donors must have a minimum weight of 110 lbs., must be between the ages of 16 and 75, must eat well, and not have received a tattoo in the last 12 months. The drive began in 1999 for a boy who was sick with Leukemia and it has become an annual event since then.

Covert Craft Fair and Festival

On Dec. 1, the Raymar Children Fund, founded by Covert Principal Darren Raymar, will be having its first annual Holiday Craft Fair and Festival. All of the proceeds from the event will be given to local familes that have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. Wogan Family Lecture

Novelist Tom Phelan will discuss life in rural Ireland before the automobile at Molloy College on Dec. 2. Phelan's talk will be illustrated with selections from his novels. Craft Fair and Flea Market

The Rec Center will be the site of the Rockville Centre Parks and Recreation Department's Annual Holiday Crafts Fair and Flea Market on Sunday, Dec. 2. There will be a large assortment of merchandise for your shopping pleasure. The fair will open to the public from 9:30 am to 4 a.m. and there will be free parking and free admission. Leggz Ltd. Dance to perform Nutcracker ballet

Leggz Ltd. Dance and the Rockville Centre Guild For The Arts is preparing to perform a full-length production of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker from Dec. 7 to 9. The ballet is the only full-length Nutcracker on Long Island and will feature live music from the 70-piece, South Shore Symphony Orchestra. Performing as the Sugar Plum Fairy is Rockville Centre resident Kathleen Breen Combes. Combes is also a principal dancer with the Boston ballet. The production will also feature principal dancers from the Washington Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, Suzanne Farrell, Mark Morris, New York City Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Alvin Ailey, SanFrancisco Ballet, Carolina Ballet, Morphoses, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Broadways Movin’ Out and Jerome Robbins Broadway. This Nutcracker will also feature more than 100 young dancers from the greater metropolitan area.

The performances will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. Tickets for the Nutcracker are $24 and $22 for those over 65 or under 12. Performances will be held at the South Side High School, 140 Shepherd Street, Rockville Centre. Those interested may call (516) 766-7171 for more information.

Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave., is again sponsoring a Fall session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes, that began on Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m. — a new day and time. You may pay as you go for $15 a class. Members of the community are invited to participate. Phillips House Museum of the Village of Rockiville Centre

28 Hempstead Avenue is open, free to the public, on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and by appointment by calling: 764-7459. The museum, a sea captain's house built in 1886, has period furnishings. Permanent displays include: kitchen tools, wood working tools, toys, dolls and period glassware. The trustees are always interested in exhibiting collections of local residents. If you have one you would like to share with the community on a temporary bases, please call the above number.

Display Cases

Rockville Centre Homemakers

Craft items created by members of the Homemakers Council of Nassau County Rockville Centre Chapter will be featured in the display cases of the Rockville Centre Public Library throughout the month of November.

Homemakers is a non-profit community service organization. Members learn and teach crafts, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking and nutrition. Meetings are held at the Rockville Centre Recreation Centre, 111 Oceanside Road, Rockville Centre on Tuesdays from 10 am until 2 pm. Born in Lima, Peru, Flora Allen arrived in the United States more than thirty years ago to pursue a better life for herself and her two daughters. Always artistically inclined Flora’s true potential is now being realized following her enrollment seven years ago in her first formal art class. She has not stopped painting since, and continues to explore all mediums from oils to watercolors and acrylics. Her work is known for its excellence in landscape composition and for vibrant use of color. Flora has displayed her paintings in libraries and community centers across Long Island. She is a proud member of a

number of local art clubs.

Helen Kraus and Small Community Room Galleries National League of American Pen Women

The artistic efforts of members of the National League of American Pen Women will be displayed in our Lower Galleries throughout the month of November. Artists have used a variety of materials, styles and media. The National League of American Pen Women is an organization of professional women artists, writers, composers, photographers and lecturers. National headquarters is in the League owned Pen-Arts Building in Washington D.C. There are more than 6000 members divided among the 220 branches throughout the United States, with 40 members belonging to the Long Island Branch. NLAPW’s purposes and objectives are to conduct and promote literacy, to provide educational and charitable activities in the fields of Arts, Letters and Music, and to encourage the production of creative work in these fields. Roll Around Fun

Residents can treat their chilren, between the ages of 1-4, to a cornucopia of fun in the Rec Center's indoor plaground from 9-10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, Saturday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 25. The fee is $12 per family for a single visit, or you can use your Roll Around Fun Card. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Thanksgiving Lego Mini Camps

On Friday, Nov. 23, children ages 5-8 can build a turkey and the Mayflower, while learning about the history of Thanksgiving. Fee for a half day is $40, and a full day is $70. Children 9 years and older will build their own robots out of legos and compete in challenges. Fee is $45 half day and $75 full day. On Saturday, Nov. 24, children ages 5-8 will build different motorized models, at the rate of $40 half day and $70 full day. Children ages 9 and up will have lego robotics again, at half day $50 and full day $90.

Operation Christmas Child

The Rec Center is collecting school supplies, toiletries and small games for distribution to needy children. Bring your donations, in their original packaging, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by early November.

Food Donations Needed

The Rec Center is accepting donations of canned and dry goods as well as frozen turkeys or turkey coupons for distribution to the needy in our community. Bring your donations Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. before Thanksgiving.

The main gymnasium of the Rec Center will be open for free play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 29. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up will begin Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. Admission is by valid 2012-2013 Recreation Card.
