Rockville Centre police make donation to NYPD

It turns out those blue ribbons all over town weren’t just for decoration.

Last week, the village combined the proceeds from the sale of the blue ribbons with a donation from the Rockville Centre Police Benevolent Association (PBA) to donate $2,000 to the New York City PBA Widow and Children’s Fund in honor of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were murdered late last year.

Barbara Murray, Mayor Francis X. Murray’s wife, suggested putting up the ribbons all over town in honor of officers Liu and Ramos. They were being sold by Mormile Florist and Art Flower Shop. The two stores together raised $600 through the sale of the ribbons to donate to the Widow and Children’s Fund to help the slain officers’ families. The RVC PBA added $1,400 to the donation, bringing the total to $2,000.

“Most of my members are from the city,” said Officer Jim Carty, president of the RVC PBA. “Most of the guys here feel a kinship. We’re all brothers in blue.”

The check was accepted by NYPD Officer Jeff Broadman, who was Ramos’ former partner.
