Sewage backup affects S. Village stores

A blocked sewage pipe created a nasty situation for some downtown businesses earlier this week.

According to Mayor Francis X. Murray, a sewage pipe near La-Z-Boy, located at the corner of Sunrise Highway and Lincoln Avenue, became blocked. The blockage forced some sewage back through pipes into the basements stores in a block on South Village Avenue, between Merrick Road and Lincoln Avenue.

Murray said that the village bypassed the blocked pipe and is bringing in a contractor to do an emergency repair. The work will require digging a hole approximately 30 feet long and 10 feet deep to access the pipe, shoring up the walls of the hole, and unclogging or replacing the blocked section of pipe.

“The infrastructure in some of the village and the sewer pipes is 100 years old,” Murray said. “So this will happen from time to time.”

The work is expected to take a few days to complete. The bypass the village installed should allow the stores’ plumbing to function normally until the work is done.
