The St. Agnes Christian Youth Organization (CYO) hosted the 2012 Joseph P. Altman 6th annual Basketball Christmas Tournament during the school’s Christmas vacation.

According to St. Agnes Coach Bill Hogan, there were three divisions of boys and two divisions of girls, for a total of 26 teams and 260 kids.

The champions of the tournament were the girls teams from St. Vincent Ferrer School and St. Anthony of Padua School, and the boys teams from St. Agnes Ferguson School, Long Beach Catholic School and St. Agnes Austin School.

An additional 12 teams and 120 kids participated in a special Tribute Day of Hoops, where St. Agnes teams hosted St. Agnes Francis de Sales teams. Breakfast was held in the Parish Center and St. Agnes teams won five of the six games played.

At the Tribute Day, NBA Hall of Famer Chris Mullin visited the students and signed basketballs for the St. Agnes Francis de Sales players. Proceeds from the Tribute Day and the Altman benefit will go toward the Christian Youth Organization programs of St. Francis de Sales, St. Anthony’s of Oceanside and Long Beach Catholic.

St. Agnes also hosted a Run, Pass and Dribble contest in honor of Timmy O’Brien, a former St. Agnes Parishoner and CYO alum who was killed in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. The O’Brien family was on hand for the inaugural championship round.
