St. Agnes welcomes new assistant principal

Saint Agnes also welcomed in a new assistant principal this September.

Brian Jensen spent his entire childhood and adolescence in the New York City Catholic school system. After getting his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Queens College, Jensen began teaching at Our Lady Help of Christians in Brooklyn. After his diocese merged, Jensen moved on to Holy Family in Flushing, where he stayed for 11 years.

Jensen decided to make a switch after his time at Holy Family.

“The Diocese of Rockville Centre has a very good reputation,” he said. “Not to say the Brooklyn diocese is worse, but I’ve been living on Long Island for the past eight years so the commute was easier.”

Jensen faces many of the same issues as St. John in his new environment.

“In terms of challenges it’s a very big school and I’m learning how things are different at Saint Agnes in terms of programs and education.” Still, Jensen has received a warm reception. “I’ve been getting to know the children and parents. It’s hard when there are over 700 students but I’ve appreciated being welcomed with open arms.”

Jensen looks forward to managing some of more extensive resources at Saint Agnes, which were lacking in his Brooklyn diocese.

“Part of my responsibility is running the sports program. In BK, they have the CYO (Community Youth Organization), but not really a sports program.” Jensen also looks forward to running the drama program and all the other enrichment programs available to Saint Agnes students.

Jensen heard he was selected for the position while attending the School Building Leadership Program at Saint Johns University last year. When he told one of his advisors the news Jensen was told, “you’re in the big time now.”
