A stolen car set off a hunt in Hempstead Lake State Park by Rockville Centre and Nassau County police officers.

According to officials, at around 1 p.m. on Sept. 10, a man left his car running and unlocked while he went in Bagelry on North Park Avenue. While he was inside the store, someone went into his car and drove away.

A short while later, a Nassau County police officer, unaware of the incident at the Bagelry, saw the car driving erratically on the north-bound lanes of Peninsula Boulevard. The officer attempted to pull the car over, but the driver bailed out and ran into Hempstead Lake State Park.

This prompted the police to set up a perimeter to search for the suspect and temporarily close parts of Peninsula Boulevard. A helicopter was also used to search for the suspect. As of 2:50 p.m., he was not apprehended and was not thought to still be in the area.
