Thrills under the Big Top
Andre McClain, ringmaster and cowboy, is at the helm of this year’s circus, accompanied by his horse Comanche.
The Wheel of Steel defies the forces of gravity as four daredevils including Flavia Costa, a 5’ll” female acrobat, propel themselves with cat-like ease in and out the spinning double wheel. Costa demonstrates that she has no fear as she undertakes an unfathomable attempt balancing dangerously on her partner’s shoulders as they spin the wheel rising 40 feet in the air.
Also, the legendary King Charles Troupe hailing from New York City – now in its third generation with Ringling Bros. – displays their NBA-worthy basketball skills while perched on unicycles, some teetering more than 10 feet in the air.
“The entire show is amazing to me,” said McClain, who is eager to share that enthusiasm with his audience. “I get everybody involved, whether you are up on your feet dancing or clapping, everyone will enjoy it. “That’s my goal – to have everyone be a part of the show and having fun.”
He encourages families to stop by the pre-show, which begins an hour before the performance. The audience can venture down to the arena floor and meet the cast, pick up some dance moves, try on costumes, learn circus skills (like juggling) from the famous Ringling Bros. Clown Alley, and practice some tricks with the King Charles Troupe.
