On Sept. 14, the National Merit Corporation announced its 2016 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, which included South Side High School’s Matthew P. Barrett and Brandon H. Stein.

“It’s an honor,” Stein said hesitantly, when both honorees spoke to the Herald

“He’s speechless,” joked Barrett.

“It feels great to be recognized on such a national level,” Stein said after collecting his thoughts.

“It was a really special surprise,” added Barrett. “My mom found out about it before I did. She’s really excited.”

Heavily involved in school activities, Stein is a member of the cross-country team, the wind ensemble and the chamber singers. Barrett works in play production, and participates in the Model U.N. and video club. “I like to be around the school for big events,” he said. “It’s nice to be involved.”

Of course, college is foremost on their minds. Both are considering Cornell University — which both of their mothers attended. Stein is applying early-decision to Cornell, hoping to major in computer science, while Barrett is considering schools in Washington, D.C., and Boston as well.

Principal John Murphy said he was happy to have two National Merit semifinalists at his school. “We’re always proud of our students when they get national recognition,” he said. “It’s a very selective organization.”
