The mayor and the board of trustees approved over $600,000 for work related to the 2014 and 2015 road improvement programs at the Dec. 8 village board meeting.

The $600,000 will be mostly spent on improvements to Tamwood, Kenwood, Briarwood and Harwood courts. “If you recall, these are the four small streets that come up off of Arrandale [Road],” Mayor Francis X. Murray said at a Dec. 4 briefing session. “That we’re going to do while we’re up there, instead of having to go back next year and break them all up.”

Arrandale Road was included in the 2014 road program. Infrastructure work has been ongoing for months on Arrandale.

The new expenditures that were approved at the meeting include as much as $160,520 for water main work, to be done by A.I.I. Allen Industries Inc. on the four Courts off Arrandale. Richard W. Grim Inc. will perform other improvements on the Courts for an amount not to exceed $449,852.

It is estimated that the Courts project will be completed in the spring.

The village has plans, which it has not released, for a second phase of road improvements to begin in the spring and summer, and a 2015 road program scheduled for the summer and fall.

“The Village of Rockville Centre performs an annual ‘Road Program’ to resurface a group of roads that we consider to be among those of the poorest surface quality in the Village,” village spokeswoman Julie Scully wrote in an email.

The road program is based on an engineering firm’s assessment of local roads five years ago, when the village created a five-year plan. “Some changes have been made to the plan to include roads that deteriorated more significantly than anticipated, or for other reasons,” Scully wrote. “We are now at the end of the five-year plan. We anticipate performing another evaluation in the Spring of 2015 and building a new plan.”

The board also approved $13,360 for soil and pavement borings, to be done by Municipal Testing Labs Inc. for the 2015 road program. This is preliminary work, so that the village and contractors know what more extensive work will need to be done on these roads.

The village did not release the full list of roads affected by any of the road programs planned.
