Hunting for deals at Sandel’s flea market

The Sandel Senior Center’s semi-seasonal flea market on July 21 drew in scores of Rockville Centre residents eager to sort through books, clothes and other odds and ends in search of hidden treasures and fantastic deals.

“The jewelry is usually the first to go,” said Jo Gallagher, chair of the flea market committee. “And then the designer clothes, and then everything else.”

The most expensive item was a child-sized recliner, which sold for $5. “Almost everything else,” Gallagher said, pointing to tables of home décor, needlework and knitting kits, and boxes of CDs and DVDs, “is just one or two dollars.”

Members of the community donated everything for sale. “We usually take out some ads in the papers, to let people know, and then they bring us their things,” said Laura Neurohr, a Sandel Center employee. Proceeds help fund the center’s senior-oriented community programs.

“The whole thing is set up by our senior members,” Neurohr says. “They set up the tables, sell the items, they walk around and buy things from other tables. They really enjoy themselves.”

Gallagher added: “By the end of the day, they’re so exhausted. They go home and sleep all weekend.”

Those who missed last week’s flea market and want to take advantage of deals — like filling a bag of books or clothes for a dollar — can stop by the next one slated for October, or the one after that, which is expected in March.
