Boy Scout joins Eagle rank

Seaford Boy Scout Troop 691 has added another Eagle Scout to its ranks. Thomas Tsaveras, 18, received the distinction at a Court of Honor Ceremony on March 15 at Maria Regina Church. About 120 people were in attendance including representatives from Nassau County and the Town of Oyster Bay.

Tsaveras, of Massapequa, is a 2014 graduate of Plainedge High School and is currently attending Hofstra University where he is studying political science.

He has been a member of the Boy Scouts for seven years, and prior to that was in the Cub Scouts. Tsaveras is the first in his family to earn the Eagle rank, the highest honor in Boy Scouts. Nationally, it is achieved by only 5 percent of boys who join the organization.

For his community service project, Tsaveras fixed up batting cages for the Police Activities League near the Massapequa train station. The work was completed last March and April. He also earned 23 merit badges.

Tsaveras, a assistant scoutmaster, says he plans to stay involved in his troop, and hopes to mentor future Eagle Scouts. He said being part of the Boy Scouts has been a rewarding experience. “It helped me develop leadership skills,” he said, “and I enjoyed making friends and going camping.”
