Levittown superintendent signs five-year extension

Dr. Tonie McDonald, the superintendent of the Levittown School District for the past two years, has signed a new contract that will keep her at the helm through 2021.

The Board of Education approved a five-year contract extension for McDonald at its June 8 meeting. The contract covers what would have been the final year of her initial deal, plus four more years. She will be paid $255,000 next year, and raises after will be based on the tax levy limit.

“I love it here,” said McDonald, a 1977 graduate of Levittown Memorial High School and resident of the district. “I’m really happy to be able to stay for five years, and hopefully more years to come.”

She started her career as a social studies teacher at Division Avenue High School before moving into administration. After a four-year stint as an assistant superintendent in Plainedge, she returned to Levittown in 2014.

“It’s hard to say what my greatest contribution to the district has been over the past two years, because I have done nothing alone,” McDonald said. “I am very proud that my team, the Board of Education and I have established a community of trust and collegiality as we all work towards our mission statement, ‘Success for Every Student.’”

The district, one of the largest in Nassau County, serves portions of Wantagh and Seaford.

“We are pleased to have Dr. McDonald continue leading our district for the next five years,” said Board of Education President Peggy Marenghi. “Her love of Levittown, passion for education, and dedication to our district and community are clearly evident in all she does. I look forward to continuing to work with her to ensure success for every student for years to come.”
