Where to celebrate with mom on her special day

Posted

“[Motherhood is] the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary — it’s an act of infinite optimism.” – Gilda Radner

Mom deserves a memorable day this weekend. In addition to the flowers and cards, and even that special breakfast, give her a break from her routine. Here are some suggestions for spending the day with mom nearby that she is sure to cherish.

Dutch Festival
It’s tulip time — just in time for Mother’s Day weekend. Immerse that special lady in the sights of spring, during one of the area’s favorite traditions: Hofstra University’s annual Dutch Festival, now known as the Dutch Family Festival, on Saturday, May 7, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
As always, enjoy music and dance, crafts, and children’s activities, while reveling in the thousands of colorful tulips to be seen all over the South Campus. Also shop in the Dutch marketplace and at the annual plant sale (where you might be inclined to treat mom to a gift).
Hofstra marks the festival’s 33rd anniversary by launching a new event: Car-less Long Island’s first Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade, from 9-10:30 a.m. The parade, which was initiated by Dr. Sylvia Silberger, chair of Hofstra’s Mathematics Department, follows a 6.5 mile loop (2.3 miles for those with less stamina) starting at Hofstra, looping through Eisenhower Park and ending back at the Hofstra.
Participation in the Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade is free, but participants are encouraged to register beforehand, although walk-ins will be accepted. The registration form and more information about the parade can be found at www.Car-lessLI.org/parade.
The first 200 registrants who show up for the parade will receive free T-shirts. Participants are also encouraged to dress-up and decorate their bikes. There will be prizes given for the best outfits (both flamboyant and professional) and most impressive bikes.
As with last year’s Dutch Family Festival, carnival rides and games for kids 10 and under are part of the fun, along with plenty of entertainment involving Hofstra’s acclaimed student ensembles and theater department, on two stages.
