Seasons at Seaford to begin on-site sales

The sale of the Seaford Avenue School has not yet been finalized, but now it’s just a matter of time.

Last week, construction began on a sales trailer for the new senior housing complex that will eventually replace the shuttered elementary school. The trailer will be located in front of the school, on the northwest corner of the property.

The Engel Burman Group is under contract to buy the site from the Seaford School District for $5.2 million to build a 112-unit senior housing complex, the Seasons at Seaford. It will also include a pool and recreation building. Voters approved the sale in 2012, and final zoning approvals are still needed from Nassau County.

Superintendent of Schools Brian Conboy said that these approvals are expected, otherwise the district would not have allowed the placement of the sales trailer. Engel Burman will pay the district $2,500 per month in rent, until the sale of the property is finalized.

Conboy said closing on the property was expected within the first quarter of the year. While that date will pass next week, he is still optimistic that the deal can be completed soon. The district remains responsible for the upkeep of the property and the building, which has become a target for vandals.

Seaford Avenue closed as a public school in 1981. It was first rented to Five Towns College, and then the BOCES, which moved out in 2010. Demolition of the building would begin after Engel Burman takes ownership.
