On behalf of the entire Seaford High School faculty and staff, Principal Scott Bersin recently congratulated Eileen Tooher —the 2015-16 Teacher of the Year.

Bersin said that Tooher, a special education teacher, is a dedicated professional who has committed her life to working with young people. Her career spans more than 30 year.

“She goes above and beyond on a daily basis for her students and has their best interests at heart at all times,” Bersin added. “She truly loves to share her experiences, knowledge and time to make their learning experience the best possible.”

According to Seaford School District officials, Tooher has worked with and been able to reach students in kindergarten through 12th grade. No matter the age level, Bersin said that she has “displayed outstanding knowledge of the whole student.”

When she had a class period off or was in the hallway, district officials said students have always flocked to her. They’ve described her as warm, caring, passionate and an energetic teacher who has high standards to district leaders.

Tooher has also shown her love for students and young people outside of the classroom environment, Bersin noted. Over the years, she spent countless hours becoming involved in many extracurricular activities, including the Best Buddies program. According to the district, she also often spent evenings and summers as a supervisor at Camp Anchor in Lido Beach.

“She always believed that these involvements reinforced her commitment to special education students,” Bersin said. “In truth, her students were always first and foremost in her heart — whether she was at home, at school or at Camp Anchor.”

In a district press release, administrators described Tooher as “a true credit to the Seaford school district and to the education profession.”
