Stephen J. Geraghty, 62, a retired FDNY Battalion Chief and Rockville Centre native, died on Wednesday, Sept. 21, after a long-fought battle with a World Trade Center-related illness. He is the fourth member of the FDNY to lose his life this week due to the devastating impact of the 9/11 terror attacks.  more
Casey Skudin, a member of the well-known Long Beach Skudin surfing family, was killed Friday in North Carolina when a tree limb fell and crashed the car he was driving during a windstorm at a resort, according to North Carolina police. He had lived in Long Beach all of his life. more
FDNY firefighters and NYPD officers went head-to-head in a lacrosse game at Greis Park’s new turf field on Aug. 21 to benefit the Brian Moore Fund, which was created in the memory of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 2015. In all, $7,500 was raised. more
On Sept. 11, 2001, Glen Cove resident Frederick N. Fuchs, a firefighter for Ladder 127 in Jamaica, Queens, was coming off a 24-hour tour and had just been relieved for the day. But after watching the attacks on the World Trade Center on television, Fuchs said, he knew his day was not over. He had to serve the people of New York. Nineteen years later, Fuchs would serve New Yorkers again by donating his plasma after recovering from Covid-19. more
