Even as Stop & Shop employees, community leaders from the Chamber of Commerce and the fire department, a Town of Hempstead official and local reporters gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:45 a.m. last Friday, and snowflakes fell fast and thick, customers hurried past to see all that the new Merrick Mall supermarket offers and start filling their shopping carts.

Winter is right around the corner, and while a sudden onrush of freezing cold weather has brought an icy chill upon the Bellmore-Merrick area, it has done nothing to diminish the community’s joyous holiday spirit.
Hanukkah is officially here, and local congregations have found creative ways to celebrate.

The Holy High Days of Judaism may be coming to a close, but there is still one more celebration to be had this year. Many houses around Bellmore and Merrick could be seen with small huts, called sukkahs, in their backyards to mark the Jewish holiday of Sukkot this past week.
