The Taylor Law was extended even though it was ready to expire. It gave the Nassau County Police Department the ability to get huge wage and benefit increases when the county executive said he has no money. The county leaders say they don’t like it, but it enables them to blame the law for huge increases and keep the union happy while votes and Political Action Committee money roll in. more
I don’t know if Richard Creeron deliberately misleads the public or he is just misinformed. In his letter to the Herald (“Union control is too strong,” Sept. 6-12), he wrongly states that the Taylor law and the Triborough law “enabled the government employees and the unions to get what they wanted through binding arbitration.” more
The Taylor and Triborough laws were enacted to protect the public from strikes of government workers. These laws have become the Achilles heel, the albatross of the public. They enabled the government employees and the unions to get what they wanted through binding arbitration. Elected officials say the till is empty and deals goes to arbitration. The union always wins. more
About the local Congressional elections for the 4th District, there are two candidates for the job. One has had the job for years. I’ve yet to ever hear from or about what she has done or wants to do. I wrote her about the new health plan and its effect on the Catholic Church. After a long wait, the response was a form letter, not an answer. more
Recently, two newly elected state assembly members ran a job fair at Molloy College. From what I hear, it was well worth the effort for all concerned and mainly aimed at getting veterans jobs. more
The election is over, signs still clutter. Eventually, the same groups will continue their ways. Our county representative is still there, as he has been for years. We get his biannual, multi-colored postcard lauding his past efforts, i.e. the farm he bought. I think it’s the public that bought it years before. more
School just opened. SATs are being given, Advanced Placement courses have started. Pressure on the students to excel increases more each year. Those who excel seem on the road to success if they can afford higher education and the huge debt it generates. more
Have you heard of the Taylor Law? The county workers, MTA, teachers and police all know it well. It’s invoked when they seek more money and benefits if the powers in charge don’t accommodate them. Part of it says public employees can’t strike. more
Both District 13 and the Central High School District are in need of new superintendents. The new governor has had much to say about Long Island (124 districts) superintendents’ income as compared to his, $179,000 per year. It will be interesting to see if our boards are influenced in the least by his comments and suggestions. The superintendents’ union threaten to all leave the Island if those caps ($175,000 per year) are put in place. more
That your publication prints an occasional letter from Mr. Richard Creeron is, to me, worth the price of the subscription. He has the rare ability to briefly use well-reasoned discourse to reach a rational, if not popular, conclusion on issues of importance. more
