Roughly 200 pedestrians were killed on Long Island streets from 2010 to 2012, according to “The Region’s Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” a report produced by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit organization committed to decreasing pedestrian fatalities. Eighty-eight died on Nassau County streets.

For the fourth consecutive year, the 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County was named the deadliest road for pedestrians in the tristate area by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The 2012 report, “Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” was released on March 7.

A 72-year-old man from Jamaica, Queens, was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont on Feb. 14 at 8:12 p.m.
