Battling an autoimmune disease, not being able to use the school laboratory and worrying about contacting enough people to complete a survey were the individual obstacles that a trio of Five Towns students faced in completing the projects that led them to be named semifinalists in the prestigious 2021 Regeneron Science Talent Search.

Many of Frank Hall’s experiences over the past 11 years are a blur. He spent many nights binge drinking, a habit that began when he was a student at Lynbrook High School and grew worse in his late 20s. It led to myriad blackouts, severe depression, hundreds upon hundreds of dollars spent on booze, and alcohol-fueled arguments with his family and friends.

Ninety percent of Rockville Centre students think smoking is wrong. Seventy-one percent think smoking marijuana is wrong. But only 57 percent of those in grades eight to 12 think drinking regularly is wrong.
Though less than 3 percent of those surveyed said they would look cool if they smoked, nearly 30 percent indicated there’s a good chance they would be considered cool if they drank.
