A 'Prince' of a day at Lawrence Woodmere Academy summer camp

Sports jersey day at Lawrence Woodmere Academy’s summer camp was highlighted by a visit from Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara on July 11.

Amukamara, who played on the Giants’ Super Bowl winning team in 2011 as a rookie, took part in the athletic drills the campers were doing, answered their questions and signed autographs.

The visit was also a feature of the camp’s Champions Sports Academy that allows athletic-minded campers to focus on improving their basketball, baseball, soccer and lacrosse and tennis skills and includes visits by Maximum Lacrosse, led by Hewlett High School alum Max Seibald, who won the 2007 Tewaarton Trophy as the best men’s college lacrosse player, and trips to Citi Field for a special program with the Mets and Madison Square Garden to see the New York Liberty WNBA team. The basketball program is headed by LWA graduate and former professional basketball player Karim Shabazz, a Far Rockaway native.

“It’s a real high-level athletic program that features real experts,” said Barbara Feldman, who oversees all of LWA’s camp programs, including a multi-faceted Center for Creative Arts.

Through the camper’s questions it was learned that Amukamara recently got married, likes to travel and hang out with his teammates in the locker room. His best friends on the Giants are wide receiver Victor Cruz and running backs David Wilson and Rashad Jennings. He also said that the toughest quarterback he played against is Peyton Manning and Cruz, the Giants leading receiver the past three seasons, is fast.
