The services provided on an outpatient basis by the NUMC department of psychiatry and behavioral health science will be led by an interdisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers and pediatric nurses. The outpatient center is located in the Butler Building on the NUMC campus and is a partner of the Nassau County Family Support System.

New amphitheater

About three hours after the opening of the new center on Jan. 18, NuHealth unveiled the fully renovated amphitheater at the NUMC. The new theater includes a modernization of teaching tools, an upgrade of audio-visual equipment, the redesign and replacement of seating and wall coverings and carpets. Computer and electrical connections were also added at each of the 142 seats. A new Smartboard and video equipment were installed. Also, an interactive response system gives the presenter a chance to ask questions and receive electronic answers back from the audience.

Walerstein provided the first lecture in the new hall: “NuHealth: 2011 and Beyond — the Perspective of the Medical Director.”

Upcoming openings

The long-awaited Veterans health clinic is expected to open in February. Members of East Meadow VFW Post No. 2736, led by Commander Sal Pellegrino, and Legislator Norma Gonsalves, worked with officials from the Veterans Administration and Nassau Count for several years to get the clinic moved from Plainview to the NUMC. Supporters said there will be more space, better tools and improved accessibility via the parkways and public transportation.

Construction of the emergency department, which would greatly expand its quarters, is slated for completion in late April or early May. Also in 2011, the hospital will unveil completed renovations of the eye center, the departments for rehabilitation and physical medicine and units for intensive care and labor and delivery.
