An evening of fun, food and blindfolds

The Rockville Centre Lions Club held its second annual Dinner in the Dark fundraiser at the Rockville Links Club on May 4.

The evening is a fundraiser designed to raise awareness for those living with visual impairments while also raising money for the Lions Club. The evening also honored three prominent Rockville Centre men: Ted Fass, Robert D. Klein and Donald J. Steinert.

The evening featured a cocktail hour, dinner and dancing. But it differentiated itself from other fundraisers in a key way: guests were given blindfolds to wear while eating dinner so they could learn how challenging it could be for someone with a visual impairment.

Last year, the dinner raised $12,000. This year, the Lions Club collected between $16,000 and $18,000, all of which will go back to the Rockville Centre community through the various programs the Lions Club supports. And a portion of the funds will go directly to the Rockville Centre Little League Challenger Division and the Long Island Bombers Blind Baseball Team.
