An ounce of prevention

Stay safe during Joaquim

Posted

While we have no idea if the Hurricane Joaquim will actually make landfall on Long Island, or pass us by, being prepared is the best thing you can do. Here are some of the best recommendations:

Ensure you have a battery-powered radio and fresh batteries. Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water. Create an emergency communications plan, select a person outside of the area and have everyone call there, not try and call each other. Develop an evacuation plan that includes identification of safe areas; escape routes, meeting locations and plans for pets. Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit including a three-day supply of water, non-perishable food, radio and batteries, flashlight and a first-aid kit. Avoid electrical equipment and telephones. Use battery-powered TVs and radios instead. Charge your cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices. Make sure to have cash available. Banks may be closed or inaccessible after a storm and an ATM won’t work without power. Fill up your car’s fuel tank. Bring in unsecured objects and furniture from patios and balconies. Discuss storm and lightning safety with your family.

During a storm:

Listen to news or radio for emergency updates. If you can hear thunder, go indoors and stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap. Keep away from windows.

Do not take a bath, shower or use plumbing. If driving, safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Stay away from downed electrical wires. All downed wires should be considered dangerous.

Insurance policyholders may have multiple insurance policies (car, boat, home, wind) with a variety of insurance carriers so it is important that they gather all insurance information so they can report claims to the appropriate carrier. Conduct a home inventory of your property. It’s helpful to keep track of model numbers and stores where items were purchased. Keep your inventory, including photos and videos, in a safe place away from your home.
