Army Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Lipari, 39, of Baldwin, died on Dec. 14 while serving in the Logar province of Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said last week. Lipari was assigned to the HHC 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, a part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Defense Department did not release the details of Lipari’s death, but did say that the incident was under investigation.

Lipari graduated from Oceanside High School in 1991 and went on to SUNY Oswego. He worked as a communications specialist for the Army. He was the second member of the military with ties to Oceanside to die this year. Marine Lance Cpl. Greg Buckley Jr., 21, of Oceanside, was killed on Aug. 10.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano ordered flags on county buildings lowered to half-staff from Dec. 20 to Dec. 27. “I join our citizens in mourning the loss of Sgt. 1st Class Kevin E.

Lipari, and send my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and fellow soldiers,” Mangano said. “Nassau County honors Sgt. 1st Class Kevin E. Lipari’s supreme sacrifice, and we will be forever grateful for his and his fellow soldiers’

dedication to our great nation.”

Lipari’s wife, Jessica Wilson, along with other members of the family, traveled to Delaware on Dec. 17 to accept his remains and to make funeral arrangements. A wake was planned for the Vanella Funeral Home in Oceanside.
