The son of a Valley Stream firefighter got some special attention on Aug. 7, when he received a check from TD Bank meant to help his family pay for the costly medical treatments he requires.

Daniel Louis Vecchione Jr., 7, suffers from congenital hepatic fibrosis, a genetic liver disease. He and his family — his father is Valley Stream Fire Department member Daniel Vecchione — were chosen for the local TD Bank branch’s Bring Change program, which solicits donations at its coin-counting Penny Arcades. The Valley Stream branch, at 275 W. Merrick Rd., agreed to match whatever sum was collected from members of the community, up to $2,000.

The Vecchione family received a total of $3,830.86.

An assistant store manager at the branch, Heather Simek, has relatives in the fire department and knew of the family’s plight, and suggested them for the benefit, according to a bank representative.
