Bellmore firefighter gunned down
Scott Brinton/Herald
The shooter, who police say they were forced to shoot down and kill, crashed into this telephone pole with his Ford pickup before he opened fire on Bellmore Fire Department volunteers who had come to his aid.

A Bellmore Fire Department volunteer, Justin Angell, was shot late Tuesday night as he attempted to help a crash victim on Bellmore Avenue in Bellmore, according to police.

Nassau County Police said officers were forced to shoot down and kill the assailant, who began firing at Bellmore firefighters after he crashed his Ford pickup into a telephone pole.

Police have not yet identified the shooter. “We don’t know who this individual is,” said Lt. Kevin Smith. The coroner, he said, will identify the man.

Police do not have a motive for the shooter’s attack. Authorities said they found several guns inside his pickup.

Police said Angell is 20 years old. He was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he underwent emergency surgery. According to knowledgeable sources, the bullet that struck him passed through him, and his injuries are “non-life threatening.” He is now recovering, authorities said.

He was probably running from something he did, but what? I'm glad to see Mr. Angell is going to recover.

Thank You for your serices Mr.Angell. God Bless You and Get well. As New York City Paramedic for 15 years it can be a very unpredictable and dangerous job that we all do.
