Blaze breaks out on Shore Road

Two Bellmore residents were seriously injured when part of their Shore Road home was destroyed in a fire on Monday, officials said.

The Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad reported that the fire broke out at 3142 Shore Road at 7:39 a.m., while the home owner, a 93-year-old woman, and her 61-year-old son were inside. The Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick and Wantagh fire departments responded with 20 trucks and 100 volunteers, who extinguished the blaze.

Bellmore fire officials said that the elderly homeowner, who was rescued by a former department chief, was in critical condition after she was taken from the home.

Vincent Scaduto, the Bellmore department’s public information officer, said that the woman’s son managed to escape from the burning house. He and a neighbor placed a ladder on top of a file cabinet to try to reach his mother’s bedroom window because she was trapped inside. When the Bellmore F.D. arrived, ex-chief John Curley was able to get her out of the house. County officials said that Curley was taken to a local hospital for treatment of lacerations and burns.

The woman and her son were rushed to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow by police ambulance. Scaduto explained that they suffered from smoke inhalation. The woman was in critical condition on Monday, and Scaduto said he was unsure of her status on Tuesday.

Although the worst damage to the home was on the main floor, Scaduto said, the fire affected the entire house. The Arson Bomb Squad and the Nassau County fire marshal were on the scene, and their investigation into the cause of the blaze was continuing as the Herald went to press.
