Boaters forced into water after collision

A boat collision in Point Lookout sent three adults and three children into the water on Wednesday as their vessel began to sink, Nassau County police said.

The department’s Marine Bureau said the incident occurred on Aug. 24 at 5:45 p.m., when a 21-foot vessel with two occupants struck a 14-foot vessel while in Sloop Channel in Jones Inlet.

The six occupants of the smaller boat were thrown into the channel after it began taking on water, including three children ages 1, 3 and 10, all of whom were wearing life jackets.

The occupants of the larger vessel assisted the victims and pulled them into their boat. No injuries were reported. The 14-footer sank and was unable to be recovered, police said.

An NCPD marine unit responded to the scene and transferred the six people to the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Jones Beach as part of an investigation.

Police said that the operator of the 21-foot vessel said that his vision was impaired by sun glare.

No criminal charges were filed — police conducted an inspection of the larger boat and issued the operator a summons for not having a fire extinguisher on board.
