Posted

Nassau County Police Department's Bomb Squad was called to a home in Valley Stream Sunday afternoon after a suspicious item was found in a home's backyard.

The incident occurred on East Chester Street between Cottage Street and Albermarle Avenue. According to officials, police located two suspects from a robbery attempt in Oceanside at a home in Valley Stream. During the search and investigation, they found a suspicious bag and called the Bomb Squad.

On first look, there was an object that looked like dynamite in the bag. Once it was removed and inspected, it was determined to be fireworks.

Residents from several dozen homes surrounding the scene were evacuated as a precaution.

Mayor Ed Fare said in light of recent events, the police took the appropriate actions. "I'm very proud of the Police Department," he said. "They did the right thing."

Fare said that although residents were never in any danger, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The residents of the home where the suspicious items was located were reportedly not home at the time. After the scene was deemed safe, residents were allowed to return to their homes.
