La bohème
The Bronx Opera Company makes its annual area appearance with Giacomo Puccini’s “La bohème,” performed in English, accompanied by a 30-piece orchestra. Since its 1896 premiere, “La bohème” has become one of the most celebrated operas, and deservedly so. Puccini’s depiction of student life in 1830s Paris’ Latin Quarter has something for everyone: magnificent music, a tragic love story, and even moments of comedy. Modern audiences may know that “Rent,” Jonathan Larson’s award-winning musical, was greatly inspired by La bohème.
Friday, May 17, 8 p.m.; Saturday, May 18, 2 p.m. $30, $25 seniors. Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus, Hempstead. (516) 463-6644.
