“The first time, I suppose, there was still the doubt of whether or not the show would go on because we had never done this before,” Tommy said. “Once that ran, we knew we could do it. Last summer and this summer, it was much more of a regimented, scheduled thing. There was definitely more certainty and cohesion.”

The troupe of students staged “Twelfth Night” in 2013, which helped them attract young performers from outside the community. Kara Arena, a 19-year-old Wantagh resident who now attends the Boston Conservatory, saw the show and decided she wanted to become involved in What You Will Productions this year.

“I thought there was no way that students put this together,” she said. “I think it’s really inspiring what they do. There was no way I wasn’t going to audition.”

Arena is playing Juliet in this summer’s show, with Tommy playing Romeo. Michalakis was cast as Friar Lawrence, while Chris is directing the 12-member cast. The What You Will founders all act as producers, in addition to designing and building sets.

Chris explained that What You Will has consistently produced Shakespeare plays because they love analyzing his work. They decided to stage “Romeo and Juliet” because it’s a tragedy about young people that a vast audience could relate to and knows well.

The What You Will Productions version of the classic play, however, is set in the present day, and instead of families, the Capulets and Montagues will be depicted as corporations. Tommy and Kara agreed that this spin on the play allows the actors to bring more of themselves to their roles, and will, they hope, allow audiences to better connect to the story.

Chris said he hopes audiences will see a “Romeo and Juliet” like none they have seen before. He noted that two contrasting opinions about of the play have emerged over time: either that the story is one of the most romantic tales ever written, or that the lead characters are in young lust rather than love. What You Will Productions aims to spark different ideas.
